The image is a preview of the movie available via that shows global monthly Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) variability. As the globe rotates it’s possible to see the outflow from rivers such as the Amazon, upwelling in areas such as the Benguela and the seasonal succession of phytoplankton. Blooming typically starts in the spring and then is maintained as higher values Chl-a in the summer followed by a drop off in the autumn leading to low values over the winter.
